HUNGER & SATIETY
|
"After a lifetime of being overweight... through childhood, the teen years, my twenties, thirties, and forties,... finally, at the age of 55, I experienced a "normal" appetite on a low carb diet. For all of those decades I "overate" because I was hungry...It certainly is NOT a problem of weak willpower."
"At the age of 48 I easilty lost 40 lbs 9 years ago over 9 months on a carb restricted diet, and a further more gradual (but effortless) 10 lbs one year ago when I stopped eating even small amounts of wheat after figuring out that is was the cause of 25 years of GERD (dyspepsia.) I have always been active, even when overweight. I always felt hungry and/or had carb cravings with other diets or even when not dieting (ie, gaining wt)." "I got most all of my health benefits, getting off blood pressure medicine and such, before I lost any weight at all. And I didn't lose any weight the first month. But I sure pigged out. It's amazing I didn't gain weight, that first month. I never went hungry. I always ate plenty of fatty foods to keep me satisfied. I stopped losing weight after 6 months, however, and I'm still hovering on my plateau, a year later." "Many who see my weight loss tell me how hard it must have been, but I tell them it wasn't. On the reduced carbo diet, I am almost never hungry. Because of my work schedule, I have no time for exercise and all of the weight loss has been through the change in diet." "Having struggled on this way for several years, while assuming I would inevitably progress/succumb to the long-term complications of Diabetes, I was lucky enough to be told of Gary Taubes on a Diabetes on-line forum...So, without any set diet plan, I simply cut out all foods that listed more than 1g of carbs per serving. I lost 25lbs in the first 2 months AND for the first time in as long as I could remember I was no longer hungry ALL the time -- as in... as soon as one meal was finished I would be looking for the next. This was a revelation in of itself and more than worth the price of admission. I can now trust my own body to tell me when I need to eat... just like breathing or drinking water!" |
"Frankly - besides difficulty finding the proper types of food to eat that are readily available, this way of living is wonderful. I'm in great shape and am rarely hungry. I want to help as many people as I can."
"Since February, Ive lost 20 pounds of fat and gained 5 pounds of lean muscle. I eat more and better tasting food than I did while on Weight Watchers (which I had been on for 9 years). The biggest change, though, has been that I no longer am obsessed with food, nor am I hungry every few hours. My carb-induced cravings have disappeared, and for the first time in my life, I feel free. Its transformative." "Giving up grains and legumes on January 1, 2011, was easy with no side-effects. Six weeks later I noticed my clothes were getting baggy. I got on the scale and had lost 12 lbs. I noticed I was never hungry- no snacks and two meals per day usually at 7:00 am and 4-5:00 pm." "I was never hungry; If I was busy, I could actually forget to eat. I felt an amazing mental clarity, which is hard to describe. These things reassured me that I was doing something right." "Since the new year i have been cooking more Paleo but allow for cheeses and yogurt. I am excited to cook healthy foods with veggies and meats we picked up at the local farmers market grown by locals!! I feel better than ever and am hardly ever hungry. In fact I can go w/o eating for more than half the day if I decide i want to fast or something." "I have dieted since I was a teenager. I have always been overweight, except for a few 'diet successes' when I was younger. I thought that I was eating a healthy diet, albeit too much good food. I was a regular exerciser, but it never led to weight loss. Then I read Wheat Belly and immediately stopped all grains and sugar. I just was not hungry, my ezema (that I have had since college went away) and I stopped having aches and pains." |
"I was amazed how quickly my body adjusted to the new way of eating. In previous attempts to lose weight I had gone on low-fat, calorie-restricted diets that are based on 'mainstream' advice for weight loss. I would always be hungry and feel fatigued, and could never resist 'cheating' on my diets. On the low-carb diet, I rarely get hungry between meals and never feel fatigued. I weigh myself once a week. By the end of the first full month on the diet, I had lost twenty pounds."
"I stepped on the scale and got a reading of 399. I might be the only guy in the world who has ever been happy to see 399 on a scale. I have found Protein Power to be easy to follow and today weighed in at 304...I still have a way to go in order to meet my goal, but I have gotten this far without working out much or ever going hungry." "I ate an extremely low calorie diet for perhaps two years. I didn't follow any particular plan, I just avoided empty calories and counted calories carefully, limiting myself to about 1000 calories per day. I didn't eat an obsessively low-fat diet and I ate a lot of carbs I thought were healthy - rice, whole grain bread, potatoes. I was hungry all the time; I obsessed about food to the point that I planned every meal for several days in advance. I felt cold much of the time, especially at night. In addition, I fasted many weekends. Doing this, I was able to get down to a 34 inch waist." "Eating low-carb saved my health; I reversed some early diabetic neuropathy, and went from an obese lump of misery to an active Mum again. I never ever went hungry; and maintaining the weight over the last 7 years has been straightforward. My blood glucose readings are normal - not a cure for diabetes; but a brilliantly easy way of controlling it." "[My] diet roughly followed the normal USDA recommended guidelines with a few things missing and I consumed about 1800 calories per day on average, while not including exercise I typical would burn 2300 calories on an average day. This worked and resulted in 60 pounds of weight loss though I felt like crap and was hungry all the time and of that weight at least several lbs. were lost in muscle." |
"Fast-forward into my early 40s: I was riddled with joint pain, weighed over 220 pounds, and was on a cocktail of anti-depressants and anti-seizure meds... Fed up and scared, I went to a nutritionist and paid a lot of money to be put on a 1,200 cal/day standard low-fat diet, which I complied with meticulously, despite being miserably hungry all day long. And I worked out nearly every night, too. After five weeks, I was up a pound. The light bulb flashed for me: I needed to eat low-carb, and to heck with my doctor and conventional wisdom. I plan to eat this way for the rest of my life. Not only has my health improved spectacularly, but I have no cravings at all, and food takes up very little of my mental energy. I don't think everyone needs to go "zero-carb" -- far from it -- but for me, it's been pretty close to a miracle." Meet Rose >
"This time I did a little more research and conducted some simple experiments on myself. This helped me discover what foods kept me satisfied (not being hungry at all) with the least amount of calories. After some trial and I found that if I significantly reduced my carbohydrates (25-50g), increased my protein intake to 180g, and then included the rest for good quality fats I felt great was not hungry and only ate about 1800 calories while including minimal exercise (1.5 miles a day walking during my commute)."
"I have enough body fat to burn up about two pounds a week. I have lots and lots of energy, and I am never, ever hungry. Since starting on a VLCKD I have lost a great deal of weight. At one point I had lost 170 pounds. I am currently about 100 pounds below where I started. Id like to be around 225, which means I need to lose another 50 pounds (again)." "I also limited what I ate, consuming anywhere from 1200 to 1600 calories. I had oatmeal or plain low-fat yogurt with fruit for breakfast, peanut butter on whole grain bread for lunch, and salads for dinner. At my lowest in September 2010, I was 123. My problem was, I was hungry all the time and had no energy. I also binged on a semi-regular basis...Then I read Gary Taubes' Why We Get Fat and it changed my whole paradigm...Now I must say that I don't feel satisfied if I don't eat meat, and I'm convinced of the Paleo argument that it is good for us." "Started eating low carb/paleo in June... Dramatic and immediate weight loss with no hunger. No longer hungry between meals. Eat bacon and eggs every day for breakfast." |
"I lost 10 lbs during the first month and total weight loss of 65.1 pounds at the time of writing this while still not feeling hungry."
"I used to have times during the day when I was extremely hungry. I rarely feel this way now. My energy levels are more constant during the day, not the ups and downs I had before." "When I got married I was slightly overweight at 215lbs (I am 5'10") fast forward 7 years later, I am 270lbs, extremely overweight, unhealthy. No energy. I tried a calorie restricted diet paired with exercising 3x a week - I was exhausted and starving, but making some weight loss progress. Then I found out about Low Carb dieting. After some investigation I started my diet. Within three months I have lost 30lbs, I feel great, I am eating great food, and most importantly I am never hungry. I have not yet started exercising but I have lost more weight eating delicious foods on this diet than when I starved myself trying to restrict my calories. I am still on this weight loss journey, I am down to 230lbs now and I am shooting for 180lbs." "I've literally been on a diet all my life. Lost weight through calorie deprivation and also following the ill-advised low fat/high carb recommended by conventional wisdom and the U.S. government. I was always hungry with low energy. Eating that way was completely unsustainable for me." "Snacks salami sticks not great nutrition but at least Im not getting fatter! Ham cubes, cheese cubes, macadamia nuts, boiled eggs. I dont feel hungry for snacks much to be honest." |
"Twice I lost about 5 pounds restricting the amount I ate following the Weight Watchers. In both cases, I was never able to loose any more then the initial few pounds, I was hungry throughout most of the day, and if I didn't remain completely vigilant, the weight came back on. Then I read Gary Taubes book--almost exactly a year ago--on the role of carbs in raising insulin levels and immediately stopped eating bread, pasta, rice, and starches. In a few months, I was thinner then I ever thought I would be again. I didn't not add any exercise to my hectic daily life. My activity level has remained constant. I am hungry less often. My energy levels are more constant."
"Since eliminating grains, I have lost 23 more lbs., effortlessly. Since eliminating wheat my cravings have disappeared, night-time snacking no more, hungry less often and for smaller amounts of food. Energy, mental state both far better. This is how I will eat for the rest of my life." "I was always hungry and thinking about food. Now on a low carb diet I eat without worrying about counting calories. It makes life easier." "Now, very early on (a week or two into the diet) I noticed that my appetite had plummeted. I didn't go into this with the intent of starving myself; I was only willing to shift my diet, not go hungry! So I realized quickly that improved control of appetite was a huge benefit. I also noticed after a few weeks (3 or 4) that my energy levels were soaring, with after-meal "crashes" in energy completely gone. Frankly, ever since going paleo, I am hard pressed to even get tired." |
"I grew up as an obese child. I never could understand why I was fat and others who ate the same stuff weren't. I was always accused of just eating too much - calories in/out thing. Maybe I did, but that did not explain why I was always hungry - why was there no "appetite off switch?" One time, many years ago, I lost 100 lbs. in a year when I turned 30 on a low calorie semi-starvation type diet. In spite of constant hunger, I remember thinking, "This was easy, how come I hadn't discovered it before?" Then I quit starvation rations (I could only maintain my weight eating green salads) and the lbs. quickly returned about as fast as they came off. Keeping the weight off was impossible!
I came to realize it was carbs that I had problems with and reducing them might at least arrest my never ending weight gain. Low carb did just that and enabled me to lose those hundred lbs. again with no hunger albeit over many years time since I was not after quick weight loss. I was after permanent weight loss and good health. Going Paleo for a further 30 lbs. loss was a continuation of my education on nutrition - it was the evolution of my diet to only eat basically nutritious whole foods. I still have some pounds to lose, but I no longer feel like a freak. No one laughs at me anymore, no one makes rude jokes, I can shop in non "plus" sized stores, I feel normal and I feel good! Taubes's "Good Calories Bad Calories" book was also instrumental in my understanding of the causes of my weight problem. It's my favorite all-time book, I read it three times!"

"I have been a vegetarian, high-level athlete and scientist for a long time. Up to about 4 years ago, I ate what is commonly believed to be a very healthy vegetarian diet with lots of whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruit. Lots of cold pressed vegetable oils. Some eggs and cheese, but little or not butter. Although I was doing everything that I thought was right for a healthy diet, I had very bad digestion: bloating, burps, farts, etc; very bad teeth with new cavities all the time, and receding jaw bones; mineral deficiencies, dull skin, and was always hungry"
"Lost 40 pounds in 6 months without being hungry or craving sweets. My depression went. Energy levels like I was 20 again. My asthma and other allergies disappeared." "Once I realized I was losing weight, I decided to read up on low-carb dieting. I chose Protein Power and began living the low carb lifestyle in earnest. The weight dropped steadily and I was not hungry. If I did get hungry, I ate." "I had thought this was going to be a temporary diet to lose some weight I had gained after knee surgery, but I knew right away I could not go back to eating grains and legumes. I stopped feeling hungry and weak all the time and I did not need to eat every other hour for fear of fainting. I did not look pregant at the end of the day. The more foods I eliminated the easier it became to identify other foods that were giving me digestive trouble. So that lead me to reduce my carbs even more. The lower I went, the better my chronic digestive problems became." |
"I had lost about 35 pounds counting Weight watchers points and kept it off for 10 years. But, I was hungry all the time, even though I ate every 3 hours. I read about low-carb diets in reader's Digest in 2011, got the books by Jonny Bowden & Gary Taubes, and slowly eliminated the bad carbs from my diet. I was amazed at how my hunger subsided."
"For 2 months I diligently counted calories, keeping within daily and weekly limits. I also did some mild exercise 3-4 times per week: walking, Wii Fit, DVD workouts. My cardio-vascular health began showing some minor improvement, but my weight was not changing and I really wasn't feeling very good. I was hungry ALL the time. Even after just finishing a meal. My results were not great. Heck, they weren't even good." "When I reached 265 pounds and heading upward, I gave up. I had a lifetime of Weight Watchers, going on and off, spending so much money and time on meetings. I'd lose a good amount of weight, but soon I would get so hungry that I just couldn't stop myself from eating and I'd gain it all back again, plus some extras just for good measure. I must have done this 6 or seven times, starting in my teens up through my early 50's. It was so discouraging and I felt like such a failure." "I am never hungry between meals. I have few cravings. I feel terrific. All my bloodwork is within normal ranges." |
"Have always been overweight ("stocky" as my Mom used to call it) and when BP went to 155/95 my doctor said it was time for BP medicine. That scared me, so I "went radical" and started to eat very healthy (no white food) but still did carbs, only brown fibrous ones (brown rice, whole wheat bread, etc.) and walk regularly. Dropped 35 pounds, felt better but felt hungry a lot."
"I quickly lost weight without being hungry, felt great, looked fabulous. Id been creeping up on 200 lbs, but for my 50th birthday party in 2004 I wore a stylish size 8 skirt and blouse. I was still 145 lbs, down from 196 lbs." "I now drink a cup of double (heavy?) cream with coffee before I go to work and have to set my alarm to remind myself to eat lunch by 2pm. I am almost never hungry - very rare that I get a rumbling stomach to tell me to eat." "Eating meat and veggies got me down from 200lbs to about 160 and I was never hungry." "I find eating paleo to be the easiest way to eat - generally if you can spear it or pick it from a bush or tree, you probably shouldn't be eating it. I'm never hungry & the weight just drops off, plus I never feel bloated - no more wheat belly (although if I do eat a cheat slice of cake, I really feel it the day after)." |
"I bought a treadmill and started walking 3 or 4 times a week. I started trying to diet. I resigned myself to being hungry. After a week of this and feeling like I had no energy much of the time and little weight loss, a friend posted something on Facebook about the butter shortage in Norway...I cut most of the carbs from my life in just a couple of days. I started eating fat again and stopped feeling guilty about it. Literally almost overnight, i felt better. suddenly I had more energy. I stopped being hungry and more importantly the weight started to drop off. I'd lost 15 lbs in the first 3 weeks. Now, a little over 2 months later I've lost over 35 lbs.
I feel great! I never have cravings for carbs. I have endless energy when I get on the treadmill. I'm never hungry between meals and I really enjoy what I eat. I mean, what's not to like? Steak with butter? Salmon in a heavy mustard cream sauce? Most importantly, I'm fitting into clothes that I haven't been able to wear for more than 5 years. I'm not on a diet. I've changed my diet for life and couldn't be happier."

"When I got hungry at night I would snack on bacon & breakfast sausage. I never counted a calorie. I never counted a carb. I never went hungry. I wouldn't have believed I lost a pound unless I looked at a scale. At the end of one month of total restriction, I had lost 5 pounds. At the end of two I had lost 10. I still pig out. I still eat when I want to, just without so much sugar. I'm magically lighter. I'm not a scientist; I haven't run any controlled studies; all I can tell you is something else is going on here that has nothing to do with starving yourself & exercise. I did both of those things expecting to loose with zero results. I did what I described above, not knowing what to expect, & I lost."
|
"I started Atkins in the 1970s but did not lose weight at the time, did not get my carb level low enough. But I did not gain weight and was not hungry."
"It's been very easy. For the first time in my life, food is a non-issue. I'm never hungry. I never have cravings. If I snack, it's a piece of cheese or some olives and mayonnaise. But I rarely snack. In fact I have to remind myself to eat regularly." "My current diet is easy to stay on. I no longer worry about how much I eat. I eat until I am no longer hungry. I do not put on weight." |
"I'd done a calorie counting diet in the past, but on them i was highly irritable, had no energy, was starving all the time, etc. Low carb, after getting used to telling people "no", was really easy--was never hungry, had stable energy, got to eat delicious food and didn't have to stress about figuring out how many calories were in it."
"For me, the biggest benefit is that I am no longer hungry ALL the time. We can fast for half a day or more occasionally without feeling like we're deprived." |
"I struggled to lose [the weight] by running 4 miles a day and eating low fat foods like dry salads and plain yogurt. My feet hurt all the time. There was one day when I broke down in tears over the thought of one more dry salad. I was so hungry all the time I couldn't think about anything else but food. I ran every day and couldn't lose weight. I couldn't do this anymore. Then I found Andreas Eenfeldt's blog where he promised a high fat low carb diet would calm my hunger. I tried it and the very first day I walked around in a daze because I wasn't hungry or thinking about food. I decided I would commit to this diet. Around week 5 I crashed. My arms siezed up with cramps. I could not hike. I thought I would die. I read Protein Power and Dr. Eades said that would happen and I should consume more sodium, potassium and magnesium. Instant relief. And all of a sudden the weight loss hit me. I lost most of it (about 25-30lbs) in the few weeks. I could feel the changes daily.
I realized my feet no longer hurt. I started noticing that I could exercise hard all day without hunger, without eating during or before. My outlook on life changed and I felt a radiant joy burning inside me. I felt an inner calm. All these things continue to grow and become more intense the longer I stay on this diet."
"I am hardly ever hungry between meals now. I have no cravings at all. I intend to live like this forever because I believe sugar and carbs are more responsible for me having a stroke than cholesterol and fat."
"I had tried Jenny Craig (lost 40+ lbs), but was always hungry and the weight came back. I had never liked vegetables so dieting was hard." "I have read every diet book and tried just about every diet out there. I keep coming back to low carb because its the only one that works. At my highest I was 250 lbs ((5' 3"). When I record my eating in food diaries I average 800-900 calories per day, with an occasional splurge. I'm just not hungry much, many times I get busy and just forget to eat." "Got the lecture from my doc about being too sedentary, drinking too much wine, eating too much etc. All based on the cals in vs cals out model. I tried to bring up the subject of carbs being the cause, and he was dismissive. Anyways I was so presuaded by Gary Taubes that I began to agressively cut out flour and sugar of all kinds ( including natural sugars). But ate more meat of all kinds. I was amazed to see how fast my gut fat dissappeared. Within weeks my weight was falling, and I felt less hungry. And I was not exercising at all! I went quickly from 199 lbs to 193 lbs, then to 185 lbs in about 6 weeks." "6 months before my diagnosis [while still eating low fat, high carb] I broke 300lbs and decided to begin doing something about it and signed a gym membership. 6 weeks before diagnosis I was 345lbs, going to the gym 5 days a week for 1.5 hours a day, ravenously hungry all day long, and still gaining weight." "The ease of Primal Blueprint has surprised me the most. Fat tastes delicious, so I eat better-tasting food. I don't go hungry because I simply eat until I'm full instead of counting calories." "I have also been on Weight Watcher's too many times to mention. It's a diet that doesn't work for me; I'm always hungry and don't lose weight quickly." "I've always been over weight and would diet all the time, low fat calorie controlled diets. I would lose the some weight but would always be hungry and crave sweets and junk foods. After a few months I would put the weight back on plus a few extra pounds. Since starting on the Paleo lifestyle I've lost the weight and kept it off and eat food more food than before and never feel hungry." |
"He unfortunately like almost all AMA trained doctors has little knowledge of or interest in nutritional causes of disease. He is a little beyond calories in - calories out, but not much. My weight is still way down, I avoid all kinds of carbs regularly and I feel great and cannot imagine ever eating bread and pasta regularly again with its associated allergies , joint inflammation and weight gain. I never feel food deprived, sleep well, and am rarely hungry or crave carbs. My cholesterol is though still way up and I am hoping to find a doctor that is interested in looking at the actual causes of my cholesterol problem."
"I lost about eight pounds within maybe two or three months without any significant need for will power because I was eating as much I felt like. A clear change was that I stopped waking up as hungry as formerly." "This time I started doing some research and found Gary Taubes book, Why We Get Fat. It made so much sense to me, I immediately changed by diet from low fat, moderate carbs, moderate-high protein to moderate-high fat, low carbs, moderate-high protein. I also reduced my cardio significantly (I still bike 30-40 minutes a day...but that is less than half what I was doing). In 2 weeks, I lost almost 4kg, half an inch from my waist and feel much more energetic, and no longer feel hungry. (I'm eating more, and exercising less) - I keep my carbs to less than 50g and eat *much* more fat - cheese, chicken with skin, olive oil, fatty red meat, sausages - virtually all of the things I had avoided for 20 years (including during my initial diet phase) - and by bringing those things back into my diet, I no longer have the carb cravings I had on my previous moderate carb diet." "I had a double chin, a rather large spare tire and had no energy. Worst of all I was hungry all the time. Everyday I would have a sandwich for lunch. By 3:00 I couldn't wait to eat again. Dinner was meat, vegetables, rice or pasta and bread. After a dinner of pasta, salad and bread I would be craving something sweet immediately after dinner. So I would usually have some ice cream or other dessert or a bowl of "healthy grains" cereal...That led me to Paleo/Primal diets and Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson and Andreas Eenfeldt...I can now go a day without a meal without even thinking about it (whereas I used to be constantly hungry). By November of 2011 I was down to 174 for a total loss of 36lbs." |
"I have been dieting since 1963 when my mother first took me to The Diet Workshop. I was 11 years old...and I have been hungry all these years! I have faithfully followed a low fat diet and have successfully lost weight when "on a diet". And I always gained it back again, plus a little more each time...I learned very quickly that fat actually is "satisfying" and I was not hungry between meals, had no cravings for sugars or starches once I got them out of my system... which took only about 2 weeks...Best of all, my satiety gauge has been re-set. Funny how fat works! So after more than 40 years of dieting and being hungry, I now eat what I want (because I don't want sugars and starches any more),I am at my ideal weight, and I feel great."
"Then for a couple of days I ate high protein for breakfast and lunch and immediately noticed I no longer had that afternoon swoon, need for a snack or lethargy. I found that no or low carb breakfast helped keep me from feeling hungry prior to lunch." "I lost 35 pounds without feeling like I was even trying. I was never hungry. The food I ate was satisfying. I became pregnant and thought 'well I need carbohydrates for the baby.' So I started eating things like fries and pizza. I was diagnosed very early with Gestational Diabetes (about 12 weeks). I went back to the low carbohydrate lifestyle and have managed the diabetes very well. I have had a remarkably easy pregnancy. No morning sickness, optimal weight gain, no cravings, no swelling, and ideal blood pressure readings. I attribute all of this to my diet." "Not once in the year of living the Atkins lifestyle have I been hungry, or looked to eat off plan." "I'm still new to Paleo. So far I enjoy eating unmeasured and unweighted foods. It is freeing to eat as much as a like. I'm less hungry throughout the day and don't get the afternoon lows anymore." "My health was very bad and I didn't want to live like that anymore. I knew I had to make big changes. I got out my old Atkins book and jumped in full steam. It wasn't easy at first but I wasn't hungry." "I ate when I was hungry and that was that. Food/dieting/meal planning/etc didn't occupy my thoughts at all, which was a marked departure from my past." |
"I am a veterinarian. I learned how to get remission in diabetic (type 2) cats using a carbohydrate restricted diet. I was able to get them off insulin about 75% of the time. The ones that I couldnt get into remission were well controlled.
I then learned that you could use the same diet to treat obese cats. The first patient I treated was my own obese cat. After years of slowly gaining weight on a prescription, low fat diet, I was able to get her down to her ideal body weight. I was surprised to see she was no longer waking us up at night from excessive hunger.
I then went on the Atkins diet in June 2003. I lost most of the 30 lbs I needed to lose during the first two months. Like my cat, the weight loss was effortless. The pounds just melted away. I had to buy new clothes twice. I didnt believe it would be possible to lose weight without hunger. I was a wrestler for much of my school years. I believed the only way to lose weight was to be constantly hungry.
After maintaining the weight loss for a year, I had my cholesterol tested. I was scared to see what it would show. My doctor and I were both stunned to see that values went from fairly good to great."

"Paleo has allowed my mind the peace it has been looking for. I can focus my attention on more important things in my life - food can finally be secondary, something I enjoy but does not consume my thoughts. I can listen to my body and rely on it to tell me when it is hungry. Real animal protein is an amazing thing and I finally understand what "full" means."
"I'm very jealous at the subset of people who would have lost 50 lbs by now instead of 14. But I just need to take whatever benefit I can get. At least it's progress. With this diet, I eat whenever I feel hungry so I do not suffer." "We have not cut dairy, but have reduced it 90%. We have cut beer, but still have tequila and vodka. This is all about to go as well. My husband feels great as well. The first thing I noticed is how not hungry I am and how well I sleep." "Before this research project I tried Weight Watchers (three times) and even when I did follow it perfectly, it didnt work. It also left me miserably hungry and grumpy. I tried working out hard for 6 months but was still exhausted, hadnt lost any fat and was even hungrier." "I have now lost 55 pounds since Nov 21, 2011, and have only 25 pounds to go for ideal weight. I am never hungry and must remind myself to eat at least 1500 calories a day, since I work out a lot and probably need 3000." "I'd tried every diet under the sun to get down to my goal weight, but nothing seemed to work and I was always hungry and obsessing about food and counting calories." "I have tried reduced calorie diet - low fat things, limiting portion sizes - and felt very hungry. This time around I did not feel hungry and I never really felt like I was missing out." "This is frustrating but I feel so much better - I no longer have shaky episodes where my blood sugar plummits and I feel less hungry in between meals even despite the fact that I'm not snacking." "Prior to my pregnancies, I had maintained my weight by following a low-GI diet combined with lots of cardio exercise. I was always hungry, however, and lacking in energy. I just didn't feel right. Maintaining my weight was always a struggle and I hoped there was another way." "I have lost only 15 lbs so far in the almost 3 months, but I feel great, have tons of energy, and am not hungry at all on the [Atkins] diet. My lipid panel improved, I came off my diuretic and have normal BP, no more ankle swelling and lots of energy to exercise." "I am finally able to reduce my weight, although only slowly. I am more patient, less hungry, no more hunger pangs and terrible cravings. I feel happier and stronger and never have stomach aches anymore." "My biggest thrill with all of this is that I no longer have my highs and lows all through out the day, feeling hungry, faint, dizzy. I feel "stable" for once." "I AM happy with how the low/no-carb eating has stopped my mood swings, and stopped by carb-triggered binging. If you continue to substitute low/no-carb foods, and eat fats, you'll naturally drop pounds and maintain a healthy weight, even though you may not be as skinny as you'd like to be. And you're never crazy-hungry, which you get when you restrict calories." |
"That was definitely a different way of eating, super low fat, no meat, lots of grain, fruit, vegetables. I'll go radical, I thought, I'll try that food. So I switched everything, dove right into it, ate like that for 18 mos.. And felt awful -- hungry, bloated, lethargic, moody, with gout pain. I lost weight, about twenty-five pounds, but then started gaining it back...And then found Robb Wolf's stuff...That was my second big food change. And I knew immediately it was right. My weight dropped in about four months down to where it is now, around 185. I stopped weighing, in fact, because I don't care. I look right, I dropped multiple pants sizes, and I'm not hungry all the time."
"My weight loss was amazing! I dropped 6 lbs in the first week, which I had never done before, and hit my initial goal weight (145 lb) in 8 weeks! I have never had this experience. The last time I lost a lot of weight (1996) it took me 8 months, and I was hungry the whole time. I haven't been hungry, and have generally felt decidedly satiated." "I read some information on Mark's Daily Apple and found Robb Wolf's book. Somewhere in that short time I made the adjustments from Atkins to Paleo. I thought I needed to lose 8-10 lbs...I lost 11 in the first 2 weeks. It simply melted off after I laid off grains and dairy. I wound up losing a total of 20 lbs!! The next 9 lbs came off slower...but they just kept coming off!! And I was eating delicious food, rarely hungry! The amazing thing to me then, was that although I was still running some; I was running far less. Yes, running LESS and losing MORE weight - it was AWESOME!" "I saw horrendous pictures of myself and realized I had gotten fat. Read Gary Taubes book 5 weeks ago. I've lost 16lbs and I'm never hungry. I take one day off a week and eat whatever I want. Usually pizza and sushi." "When The Atkins Diet first appeared in the 1970's, I was in my late teens and followed it for 1 year. I will never forget how energetic I felt, how not hungry I was, how old favorites like ice cream no longer looked like food to me and how thin I got!" "I am very grateful to Zoe Harcombe and her book. My weight has been up and down for years having following Weight Watchers mostly. This way of eating stops cravings and I never feel hungry and I just wont return to bad habits. I feel liberated." "What won't happen: You won't be hungry - You won't pace in front of the fridge anymore with guilt because you still want to eat, even though your stomach is painful and bloated from the starchy meal you just ate 15 minutes before." "I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), and my doctor suggested a Low-Carb Diet. I tried an Atkins-type diet, limiting carbs and calories, staying with lean meat and no fats. I was miserable. I lacked energy and was hungry all the time. A friend told me about Keto...By the end of the month I had lost 20 lbs. I kept up the diet through the second month, and say another 10 lbs disappear. My appetite dropped, and I found it easy to stay under my calorie goal, while still being about to add fats." "I was lucky; the diet just suited me. Never felt hungry, weight loss happened immediately, while the disappearance of the Chron's symptoms was an unanticipated but such a thoroughly welcome side-effect that it has been fairly easy to continue the diet." |
"My doctors over the years always insisted on a low-fat/low calorie diet that felt horrible. I would follow it exactly, feel hungry and tired all the time, and not lose. Some of them even implied that I must be cheating, and that is not the case. I could not lose on 1200 calories. When I would go off the diet, I would eat only when hungry but the scale crept creeping up."
"I'm feeling healthy and not hungry on 20g per day as I now understand that fat is not evil and am not restricting my calories." "I know on Paleo that timing meals is not part of job description if you know what I mean, nevertheless, I feel better, have fewer cravings, and have energy to match my now teenage boys when I eat 5-6 times a day. I keep it Paleo, I never feel hungry, but I feel mentally clear and confident and full of energy when I eat 5-6 Paleo meals a day." "What happened was nothing short of incredible for a number of reasons: 1) This program stopped me from being ravenously hungry. 2) I lost 22 pounds in 6 weeks!" "I started with a strongly reduced carb diet, hadn't heard of Paleo yet. Lost some weight, tightened up nicely. But, I was STARVING all the time. Stumbled onto Mark's Daily Apple, thought it wouldn't be so bad to try. I wasn't as hungry and loved eating all the delish foods that I didn't before. Somehow found a blog post about Paleo and jumped on board. LOVE LOVE LOVE it, I eat so good now. I am NEVER hungry." "The summer following my sophomore year (2007) I went on a calorie restricted diet. I always ate at least 1200 calories, and no more than 1600 per day. All foods were fair game. I did steady steady cardio (running 1-3 miles at a time 4-5 times a week). I started at 140lbs and got down to 127lbs and a 27" waist by the end of the summer. I started to slowly increase my calories, and in the fall I started to be ravenously hungry and miserable all the time. I became miserable, felt tired, insatiably hungry and slowly started to gain weight." "Knowing that I was losing weight, feeling great and wasn't continuously hungry made me more and more confident I was doing the right thing. I took the approach of what could I find and eat if I were lost in the woods... you can't hunt for a loaf of bread." "I don't exercise all that much and I also don't like eggs all that much so breakfast is usually sausage. I also eat a lot of cheese. I also love the recipes on here! I love not feeling hungry all the time!" "Nowadays, I won't eat any grains. Once per week or so, usually after a weight-lifting workout, I'll have some starchy veggies like potatoes or yams. I never get hungry before 1pm. I am a voracious drinker and find that whiskey does not cause the same water retention and ill feelings as beer. Plus, a dinner of steak, bacon, and whiskey is badass. Incidentally, that's one of the only good uses for grains: whiskey. Luckily we don't have to EAT grains; that's what animals are for." "I am a middle aged woman who bought the low fat thing entirely. I was always hungry! I got interested in eating locally for political reasons, then a friend told me about paleo. Though I'd give it a try. It certainly cured the "always hungry" problem and I've been slowly losing fat, about a pants size in 6 months." |
"I ate blueberries and oatmeal (with some brown sugar on it) for breakfast every day, a big "healthy" whole wheat sandwich for lunch, and dinner was often whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce, or chicken/fish, or often, rice with beans. I was eating what I was "supposed to", I was going to the gym every night after work. I also found that I was very hungry and very ready for every meal. I gained another ten pounds.
So I worked harder at the gym. I had my body fat ratio calculated. I asked a trainer at the gym what I should do, and she asked me details about what I was eating and how much I was exercising. Her advice was "ummm...portion control I guess?" So I tried "portion control" (I felt like I must be some kind of pig after all) and found it to be extremely difficult. I was constantly hungry."

"Of course this is directly the result of eating lots of fat!!!! There is NO other way to do this! I was not hungry in the old way...with the "shakes" and feeling weak etc. This new hunger is simply a bit of rumbling in the tummy - which is easily ignored until it's time to eat."
"I knew it was right because I had tried it earlier in my life and was never hungry. My wife kept blasting me to get off of it because consuming the fats was going to kill me. I knew then, that I would not be hungry. But now my diet had the recommendation of a respected friend and from a book written by a respected medical journalist." "I used to have to eat about every three hours in order to avoid getting too hungry, because when I got really hungry, I would get an excruciating pain in my stomach that would last maybe half an hour to an hour and was completely incapacitating. Once the pain would start to set in, I would quickly try to eat as much as I could to stave it off, but it never worked. Once it started, it just had to play out. Generally I was paranoid about always making sure to eat in order to avoid this kind of pain, but it still ended up occurring every month or couple months anyway. After going primal, I have not had this pain at all." "The only way I knew to accomplish this was to work out incredibly hard for about two hours a day, EVERY DAY, and to eat a diet of foods that were VERY restrictive. Yep, I was hungry a lot. I thought my metabolism was exceptionally slow because it was so incredibly hard for me to lose weight...I found the secrets. I lost fifty pounds in a fairly short period of time. I was NEVER hungry and I ate nutrient dense foods. I didn't spend a single moment in a gym, didn't run a single mile and best of all, I am off all blood pressure meds and my doc has told me that ALL of my blood health markers are PERFECT! I got really healthy and the weight simply fell off!" "My whole life I was the kind of person with granola bars in my purse because I was hungry all the time and I would get tired and feel like I was starving if I didn't eat every few hours...I have more stable energy levels while following the primal blueprint, I have much better concentration, I saw improvements in my acne, heartburn, and I am no longer constantly hungry." |
"I've struggled with my weight somewhat ever since the latter part of university. One time while in university I restricted my calorie intake a great deal and mostly lived off of rice and spaghetti. I was always hungry and had a lot of trouble concentrating, but successfully took off about 10lbs...Then I was exposed to Gary Taubes' Good Calories, Bad Calories and have switched my mindset completely around what a healthy diet was, and it also accorded very well with my own experience (and that of my father, who has Type II diabetes). I'm now intending to permanently restrict my carbohydrates, and have lost 20 pounds in the last 2 months."
"Reduced hunger. I think this one deals with having stabilized my blood sugar. I used to get hungry very often and eat frequently. Especially with the threat of the aforementioned stomach pain, I was particularly careful to always have food on hand. After going primal, I just didn't get so hungry any more. And when I did feel hunger, it wasn't so pressing, and I could easily ignore it and it would go away for a while. This meant I could take the time to prepare food when I was hungry instead of rushing to grab whatever was quickest and most convenient. However, this actually took about two weeks to get to that point. For the first two weeks or so of the diet, I was still hungry a lot and had to eat frequently. But after I adjusted and stabilized, I spontaneously ate a lot less and less frequency. Hunger was no longer such an urgent and constant issue." "It has now been 4 months and I don't have carb cravings and it is so freeing to be able to go through the day not being worried about being hungry." "The first week [after going paleo] was horrible. I was going though sugar withdrawal: pounding headaches, moodiness (more like extremely pissed off), insomnia, MASSIVE sugar cravings. By week 2 the withdrawal symptoms werent as bad. By week 3 they were completely gone and I was starting to feel very good; my energy went way up, my mood improved dramatically, I was feeling like a super hero. The weight was falling off. I was rarely hungry between meals. My cravings were mostly gone. My depression disappeared (along with the medication I was on). I dropped to 170ish within 8 weeks, I was amazed when I looked in the mirror. Not only did I feel like a super hero, but I was starting to look like one too." |
"Went up to 148 (my heaviest as a vegan), dropped to 142 when I added fish and eggs, then went paleo and currently am between 128 and 130 at 5"3". I am now rarely hungry, never dream about food, and I eat what and when I want within the paleo/primal template."
"The only obstacle I perceive is people's preconceived notions that they can't survive on such a restricted diet. They additionally believe that they will be hungry all the time. The diametric opposite is true. A carb free diet will sometimes leave you feeling empty, but never hungry." "I came to paleo as a thin, mostly vegetarian runner/triathlete. Before that, I was overweight and very out of shape. For most of my life, I've had trouble sleeping, been tired all afternoon every day, and have been constantly hungry." "Only starting the journey, already feel a lot more energetic and seldom hungry, and no longer ever bloated in the stomach, overeating gradually disappearing except if I eat high carb for a day or so." "Three months into eating primal and I am seeing the changes that I couldn't get this past winter. After reading The Primal Blueprint, I knew this was for me.I'm enjoying the food I eat and also eating when I want. This past winter I ate a lot of whole grains and it all tasted bad. I would have to add a lot of stuff to make it taste good. I was also always hungry and eating every few hours. Now I eat a few times a day and snack if I feel hungry." "Primal Blueprint with Intermittent Fasting (skipping breakfast every day), has fixed a lot of chronic health problems for me - obesity, depression, sciatica, irregular menstrual cycles, GI discomfort, acid reflux, and several different food intolerance symptoms. I've lost 33lbs in 5 months without feeling hungry, bored or deprived like with other diets." "And amazingly, I finally stopped feeling hungry between meals. I used to eat three main meals, three smaller snacks, plus low-level grazing all day long, but suddenly I just wasn't hungry for all that -- I didn't feel weak, woozy, or shaky if I waited more than two hours between eating. In fact, I found I could actually skip meals without even developing a headache. Coming from a family where we all thought we were borderline-hypoglycemic due to our constant need to eat, this was a huge development." |
"We tried cutting calories but had constant cravings for sweets and bread and potato chips. We attended a lap band seminar together. It was kind of terrifying...mutilating yourself because you can't stop eating? We just didn't see a way to stop eating ourselves to death. Then a newly skinny friend recommended Simeon's HCG diet...it was 500 calories a day for 40 days with no carbs and daily injections of HCG. Our weight loss was dramatic. I lost 29 pounds and my fiance lost 41 in 40 days. It was a very difficult diet at first...actually, it was awful...For the first two weeks we had no energy at all. I was confused and dizzy and absolutely ravenous.I did a lot of research on diets and I found www.fathead-movie.com and through it, the LCHF movement. We stopped counting calories and just restricted carbs. We eat steak cooked in coconut oil, eggs, and chicken with the skin on. We drink tea with cream and coconut oil in it. My fiance lost 100 pounds. I lost 65.
Then we loosened up on the carb restriction and over less than three months each of us gained back about 20 pounds. So we started being strict about avoiding refined carbs once again and the pounds are coming back off. When I do "cheat" and eat bread or crackers, I'm ravenous an hour later. I start getting the low blood sugar shakes I used to get when I was overweight. It reminds me that I used to feel that way all the time. I used to cram food whenever I had an opportunity because I didn't want to have one of those low blood sugar attacks. However, I've found that when I omit the refined carbs, I'm almost never hungry. For the first time in my life, I push away from the table with my plate half full of food because I'm satisfied and full. I'm happier and have lots more energy. We now love going to the gym, whereas before it was a chore to drag our overweight bodies off the couch. I've got so much energy I changed my TV watching habits...I used to veg out in front of the TV for hours every night. Now I want to accomplish projects around the house instead of sitting still!"

"I no longer need to constantly pack snacks for my mid-morning and mid-afternoon hunger pangs/shakes. I no longer get in a foul mood when Im hungry."
"For the most part, I have 3 meals and a snack or two during the day. Occasionally, I'll have a day where I'm hungry all day and need to eat more. In that case I just eat more. Best thing about Paleo is that I'm no longer starving an hour before lunch even after having a snack. OK, I lied, the fact that I had to buy size 6 pants the other day is the best thing. :)" "After 3 days of crabbiness and headaches and fatigue, I woke up with amazing energy and a clear head. I was totally surprised with how good I felt. After one week I was sold. After two weekes there was no going back for either my husband or me I was amazed at what was possible and how many years I wasted thinking the sluggish way that I felt was normal. I never counted calories or carbs. I just followed the recommended foods to eat and ate when I was hungry. My body suddenly knew when it was full and I never overrate and got that bloated feeling." "I've struggled with my weight my entire life-gaining, then losing, then gaining it all back (and more) each time. I've tried eating a low-fat diet, WeightWatchers, counting calories-all the usual suspects. They all worked, for a while, but eventually I would give up, give in or just slowly slip back into old habits because I was tired of being tired and hungry, tired of hours and hours of exercise, etc... I transitioned to eating primal over a few weeks, and the weight began melting off-around 12 lbs per month, without feeling cravings between meals, without crashing around 2 in the afternoon, and without killing myself with exercise." "The beginning was tough I craved carbs. I was used to eating 5 or 6 times a day. But when I was able to distract myself and only eat 3 times a day, I realized I wasn't really hungry between meals, I craved food as a break. Then it got easier." |
"I also could not go without eating for more than 3 or 4 hours before. Now I can go a whole day without eating if I feel the need. Great improvement on my life."
"The weight gradually came off. I wasn't hungry very often and felt great! I went from a size 20 to a 10." "I knew about the paleo diet concept, I had read about it some 10 years or so ago when the net was young. It seemed like the right direction if not quite the right path. I had started seeing a dietician as part of my treatment and she would have me on a high carb, low fat, largely vegetarian diet which left me feeling hungry and somehow unhappy...3 days in [to paleo], my IBS was gone, my hypoglycemia stopped happening and I was eating less often. 1 week in I still felt good, I felt great in fact. I was skipping meals and only eating when hungry." "Starting off at around 15% body fat, I dropped to about 8% within 2 months, my mood improved noticeably, and I continued to gain strength in my workouts. I found that I was eating fewer calories, but not feeling hungry." "Vegan for 8 months and was always hungry and could no longer give blood due to low hemoglobin. gave up wheat at first and then went full paleo. feel better and look better than i have in 20 years." "That led me to cut out all grains and legumes, eventually, and now I get all of my carbs from vegetables and fruit. I'm four days out from my wedding, am never hungry at the end of the day, and most importantly, when I have a "cheat meal," I don't go overboard-- even after quite a bit of red wine. Knowing that I'm still relatively on track even when my Id has taken over (after a lot of wine, haha), is the real evidence that I've changed my lifestyle for the better." |
"I lost 60 pounds while counting calories and even though I felt great losing the weight, I felt hungry, miserable and tired most of the time, I was sick of counting calories so I went on a year hiatus from dieting and maintained my weight."
"I experienced shortness of breath, high blood pressure and fatigue. I ate the standard American diet and was always hungry and tired. I tried many diets but could never stick to it." "Not so interesting. I got tired of being hungry all the time and struggling with my weight. Some young friends of mine (I'm 57, they are in their 20's)were going on a 30-day challenge and I got interested. I'd been eating a very healthy "SAD" diet and had been ramping down bread consumption for some time, so it was remarkably easy to give it up...In the 7 months since then I have lost a full clothing size and my stomach has never been this flat. My acid reflux has almost disappeared, I can go more than 3 hours without crashing, and I generally feel great." "Because I am rarely hungry between meals it is no big deal to just have the coffee/tea and pass on the cakes or pastries. After all it is my life that may be at stake." "I would recommend a Primal/Paleo lifestyle to anyone struggling to lose weight or maintain a weight loss. For many attempting weight loss, constant hunger and cravings are the biggest hurdle and with this way of eating (for me at least), it has become a non-issue." "I didn't start this to lose weight. I wasn't really overweight. But the weight loss just happened. More importantly, I have tons more energy, I sleep better, have no bloated feeling, and for the first time in 15 years, I've started (albeit slowly) to reduce my meds. And I lost about 9 pounds so far without being hungry. A nice bonus." |
"The first "lightbulb" moment happened after reading an article about the negative impact of grains on health and the related symptoms. This lead me to Robb Wolf's "The Paleo Solution", which I devoured over a day and a bit and absolutely made sense to me. Since then I have discovered Mark Sisson's marksdailyapple.com, which I use as my daily reset button to keep me on track.
I have tried the conventional wisdom (CW) method for controlling my weight, with little success; lots of cardio, low fat eating along with healthy grains. It was kind of depressing, whilst living the CW way, to know that I needed to go to the gym 3/4 days a week and work my butt off and live constantly hungry just to maintaim my weight ... I was training for a half marathon just prior to going primal and after initially losing some weight, was stuck just maintaining an overweight frame whilst logging big km's in training; my caloric intake versus expenditure was saying I should be losing weight easily...Since going paleo/primal in January 2012 I have managed to effortlessly drop 9kg (20lbs). The weight loss has started to slow now as I approach what my body deems an ideal weight. Also, since I was a child I have suffered from regular migraine headaches, however, have not had a single one since going primal ... that alone is enough to want to never go back to CW."
"I was huge, and when it became clear that my pain was linked to my weight, I finally decided to do something about it. I first stuck with chicken and vegetables, and got hungry a lot. So, I went for some structure and joined weight watchers, lots a lot of weight, and stayed hungry and sad, despite eating a primarily primal/paleo diet. Then, I found the Primal Blueprint and marksdailyapple.com and things clicked. I backed off at the gym, ate a greater variety of foods, didn't shy away from fat...and everything improved. I kept losing weight, but it was fat, not muscle. I started sleeping better, exercising better, thinking better; it was a real life changer for me."
"Paleo first seemed so easy to follow, and it is. I basically eat meat vegetables and fruit. I eat when I am hungry, which is much less often than before. I love not having to count calories or carbohydrates. I started loosing weight immediately, my skin started to look younger within the first week and am feeling really healthy." "The big lesson for me has been that when I eat grains, I crave grains and feel constantly hungry... Each time i 'slip' due to travel or special occasions, i have to go through a period of craving before i'm comfortable again but once I get past the cravings, my energy level is much higher, my digestion is much happier and i don't get hungry between meals." "Going Primal turned out to be much easier than I thought. I had plenty of energy & wasn't hungry between meals. I discovered a lot of new foods (kale, brussel sprouts, sardines, herring) & really got into my meals. The results came quick too. I lost 8 pounds in two weeks & closed out March down 16 pounds, winning the bet easily." "I would previously find that when I wanted to lose some weight I would reduce portion size, but I was terribly hungry, nausesous and downright miserable..and the weight would come off, but never stay off." |
"In addition to losing ten pounds, my favorite part of the primal diet is that my energy levels are much more constant, I don't get ravenously hungry anymore, can even go a long while without eating if I choose to or need to, and I no longer get a bloated feeling after eating - unless I've indulged in something with lots of sugar, I need no 'recovery time' after a meal."
"Since adopting these food guidelines I eat less because I'm just not that hungry anymore, skipping breakfast almost every other day and rarely snacking at all. I feel my energy levels are more stable and I have more endurance." "Followed typical advice on health and weight loss for 30 years and ended up hungry, fat, no energy, indigestion etc." "Haven't experienced any difficulties whatsoever other than coordinating with my non-primal diet wife and young children. The only issue I have had is I am often hungry at night." "First I started counting calories through loseit.com. The knowledge how much I eat was really helpful, I lost about 7-8 pounds in first two months. But I was always hungry. I am small, and need few calories. I would eat muesli with low fat milk for breakfast - 1 hour later I was hungry. Then I would eat an apple and still stay hungry. I would torture myself till lunch, where I would overeat, because rice/pasta have a lot of calories and I would be so hungry, that I wasn't able to pay attenion... Coming at home in the evening I had mostly very few calories left, and very hungry. That 1/2 cup of rice with 3 oz of chicken breast didn't leave me satisfied...Paleo, Atkins... I am majoring in medical biochemistry, and it made sense. I started Atkins because I liked the idea of going cold turkey on the carbs. It was awesome! Two eggs for breakfast - not hungry until short before lunch, where I could eat a large steak with fresh salad...Vegetables with tofu for dinner." |
"I'm now 8 months into my Paleo lifestyle. I eat heaps of food and I'm never hungry. I have lost 11kgs - I now weigh 49kgs and it's stayed static for 6 months with no effort or worry at all."
"I thought i would never be able to give up grains, i ate them for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yet i was always hungry, i suffered from dermatitis, low energy, poor sleep and mood swings. Since cutting out grains, sugars and processed food i feel like a new person. I never feel hungry, even though i eat a lot less often, i don't have the afternoon slump i used to get, my sleeping has improved, my energy has improved ten fold, and of course- i've lost weight!" "It has done so much more than help me lose weight. It has taught me how to fuel my body. I have been able to lose the majority of my weight without feeling hungry, or deprived. In fact I've been enjoying delicious meals, comprised of real foods. I want to be Primal for the rest of my life. I have gone from a size 24 to a size 10." "I thought "oh my god is this it ! Is this what it's like as you get older? Am I going to have to restrict my intake so dramatically I starve." I tried cutting back and all you do is crave more carbs and grains, and you always feel hungry. That was it, restricting is NOT FOR ME." "I was 25 at the time and all of the other guys at the recruiting office were a great deal younger and I wanted to prove myself. I ran a lot and restricted calories. I slimmed down to 183 lbs but managed to injure my ankle in the process. I was also a big jerk about my weight loss, probably because I was so hungry all the time." "Since starting this diet for 3 months, my body fat is now around 10% and I don't do a large amount of exercise. I feel much better, not hungry between meals, less tired." |
"I slowed down on my workouts because I was not seeing any benefit on the scale and was always hungry, tired, irritable, and just plain un-happy. I thought that I would be happy when I finally met my goal weight and could " relax " and just cruise and enjoy my new body but I quickly noticed the pounds coming right back when I stopped. Wow, I thought to my self. I need to workout like this all my life. I was devastated with this reality...I decided to take two weeks off to heal and then start the 90 day torture all over again. I made it halfway through and just stopped. I found my self totally out of energy and sleeping at any free moment I had. I did not want to go anywhere, do anything, or even be social. I was completely broken down after 4.5 months of bashing my body every day.
While researching nutrition I stumbled upon the Paleo diet. The scale had not moved in months and I was working hard, very hard. I tossed all carbs out of my diet. Brown rice, oatmeal pancakes, whole wheat bread, peanut butter, etc. At this point I was about 165 lbs , 6 days into my new life and I lost around 10 lbs. This 41 year old man almost cried on the scale that day, tears of joy, new understanding, but mostly due to knowing I can do this until I die and it just feels so right.
I eat until I am full now, I hardly every really feel 'hungry' unless I am coming off a 24 hour fast and even then its not all that bad. Being free of the constant battles with hunger has got to be one of the best parts of this lifestyle. I can go anywhere and do just about anything and not at all worry about being hungry. I no longer eat breakfast, no need to. I am not hungry until 12-1pm anyway."
"After two weeks I had dropped 5 pounds. My standard goal weight has always been 125. Its what is on my drivers license and I am always happy with the way my clothes fit at that weight. So here I was at 125, effortlessly. I hadnt been hungry at all, and I found I enjoyed cooking new foods."
"I developed a lactose intolerence at the age of 18. I had bad asthma and allergies as a kid. I switched to soy milk and the usual pattern of thought "conventional wisdom" I started eating more whole grains, low fat everything and was hungry all the time." "I changed my way of eating on March 12, 2009 and never looked back. By August of the year, I could fit into pants that I had worn when I was 21. I went from a size 12 to a size 4 pant. I had lost the gut that never seemed to shrink, but grew about an inch a year. I felt good, I was never hungry, I normalized my blood sugars, I was stonger and I take no medication." "That was back in November 2009. It has been a long process for me, but I have gotten to the point where I am not hungry every three hours and I do not feel sluggish in the afternoon like I used to. I am still struggling with my sugar addiction, which I realized I had one because of this lifestyle. I also realized that I have a slight gluten intolerance, so I definitely stay away from wheat." |
"I lost about 20 pounds while never being hungry. I would like to lose an additional 10 but that is not as important to me as how good I feel. I would never go back to eating grains."
"What other way was there? Near the end of my time at college I tried going on a simple, calorie restriction diet. I think that lasted no more than several weeks. I was hungry all the time and fantasies of food consumed me. I remembered when I used to be a multifaceted person, and I decided that if there was a solution to weight lose, this couldn't possibly be it. How could you lose weight by turning food into the obsession of your every waking moment? It didn't make sense to me, so I quit." "After the two weeks I realized this was the life style for me. I no longer obsess on food. I used to be thinking about what to have for lunch when I was still eating Breakfast. Now I am so rarely hungry in between meals I don't obsess anymore. I used to have blood sugar crashes daily. The bad ones that make you shaky and grumpy. I haven't had one since. I have kept the weight I lost off for over 2 years now." |
"I have always struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember, I will even go as far to say that I was addicted and a slave to carbohydrate. I continued to gain weight and found myself in the cycle of eating and being constantly hungry which led me to try the Paleo diet. The biggest positive for me aside from the fat loss is keeping my blood sugar stable and being in control of when and what I eat. I am now rarely hungry and do find that I have more energy."
"I tried the Slow Carb diet because it promised rapid weight loss without hunger, and with a "cheat day" every week. I still ate whatever I wanted, but only once a week, and the rest of the time I cut out carbs entirely. I was rarely hungry (no more than when not dieting at all) and had tons of energy, which was great because I also took up martial arts and my fitness increased dramatically." |
