Hunger and bread cravings ceased with paleo

Having a "standard nutrition background" from culinary school, I made sure to have whole grains, low-fat milk, and canola oil as staples in my home. I had high cholesterol, so checked against all "high cholesterol foods" in an attempt to reduce it. Being on my feet all day, exercise was not exactly a concern for me to increase, but I did troll around the gym bouncing from machine to machine, and "warming up" for 10 minutes on an eliptical.

After being diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, but not having levels high enough to recommend medication, I still felt the symptoms and knew something had to change. I did not want to accept that being 26 years old, and having all these "ailments" was normal. I did not want to rattle off all my medications and suffer the side effects with often seemed worse than the "solution" the medication offered.

When I first heard of the Paleo diet, I laughed at the high fat, "don't worry about the cholesterol" scenario. But upon an interest in knowing more about this crazy idea, the "whole food, no processing" idea latched on and I had to know more. Improving my health, and supporting local farms with pastured animals was a win-win and so my husband and I decided to give it a go.

What took a full year to lose 10 pounds, took 2 months on the Primal/Paleo and had such energy. I actually contemplated getting up earlier than what used to be "absolutely necessary" just so I could have more of the day to do things. My hunger pangs ceased, and my incessant need for buttery, crunchy french bread became a fond memory, and recognizing why my stomach felt so cramped after the fact.

I have completed 2 Whole30 programs, and we continue to eat on Mark Sisson's recommended 80/20 rule. The feeling from "I can't have that" became "I don't want" was magical when I realized I had finally control over my impulses. I love that we support our local community, that regardless of what media or conventional wisdom has to say on the matter of this "fad diet", the results are tangible and real. I'm not paying anyone for my results, not downing pills twice a day, and my blood work shows that through this whole food lifestyle, I am healthier and happier about who I am, than I ever have been.

What was the biggest challenge to adopting a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet?
Being a chef and a carb queen, (those bread bowls at Panera's were my guilty pleasure) it was difficult to let go of the bread. After a week or so, the cravings were gone and I no longer felt compelled to sleep during the day and did not wake up wishing away the hours when I could fall back asleep. I still have a vice for chocolate, but it is now soy-lecithin free, dark chocolate, and it only takes a bite or two to satisfy me.

What advice (if any) would you give to someone interested in trying a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet? Were there any obstacles that you overcame that could help future dieters?
Always try it for yourself, and give it a real shot. Take progress photos, measurements, and perhaps a daily log to show how your mood, energy levels, and overall happiness progresses. A Whole30 program from whole9life, offers a strict but tangible way to show how you can eat until you are full, and that it is possible to do this without paying for shakes, food replacement bars or pre made plastic meals that cost an arm and a leg. It teaches you practicality, how to create meals for yourself, and you don't have to be a chef to do it!

A smoker tries paleo

6 months ago I was a smoker.

I had been smoking for 10 years and I was one of those smokers who owned it. It was a part of my identity, a facilitator of the best parts of me, my humor, my attractiveness, it was all made possible through smoking. I was also sluggish, tired, grumpy, and terribly unfit. I had a really unhealthy relationship with food and considered it the enemy, I never developed any kind of eating disorder but this was more to do with the fact that I couldn't be bothered having a disorder.

My girlfriend was obese, and we were pretty unhappy. So we made a deal: she would lose weight, and I would quit smoking.

The first two weeks were a nightmare, trying to quit smoking while calorie counting, eating salads and tuna and servings of meat the size of my palm. That was hard.

But I did it, I managed to get through the first few weeks and my girlfriend started dropping the pounds. But something wasn't right. We didn't feel good. I was hungry and tired and my body hurt all the time. So I started to research health and nutrition. I found Paleo. Give up grains? Fine. Give up my giant servings of fruit every day? Fine. Give up the sugar in my coffee? that hurt a little. Start eating more fat? Sorry, what???

Well, we tried it. Suddenly I started packing on the muscle, my skin improved, my nails improved. I learned more and more about macronutrients and micronutrients and started to really care about my body, in a way I never had before. My girlfriend started losing weight like crazy, but the best thing was it didn't hurt, it felt good, she was toning up and gaining energy and losing fat all at the same time. I learned about omega 6 omega 3 ratios, and so we started eating grass fed meat and cut down the nuts and chicken, boy did that help! I gave up milk, then changed my mind and started drinking raw milk, which is the best thing I have ever done. I learned how to read research and I learned how to prepare most of my food from scratch. I learned that life can be so good when you care about yourself, when you put yourself back into nature, into the food chain and embrace traditional lifestyle.

This has been the best, life changing experience of my life.

My girlfriend has lost 44 pounds, with another 30 to go. I lost 15 pounds without even meaning to and I feel great! We're looking at getting chickens and starting a veggie garden, and we eat bone broth twice a week. We're happy, and starting to plan a family, we're looking forward to having little healthy and happy paleo babies. Life is good.

What was the biggest challenge to adopting a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet?
I think, looking back, the biggest challenges were actually teaching myself to be free. There is nothing restricting about the paleo diet. To me it embodies only freedom.

What advice (if any) would you give to someone interested in trying a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet? Were there any obstacles that you overcame that could help future dieters?
Get a mentor, whether it be a blog mentor or a friend. You will need someone who can help guide you and give you advice.

Mom Finds paleo

A mum of 3 kids I wasn't that overweight but I wasn't that healthy either, relying on daily chocolate fixes to function. My energy levels were low, often grumpy and a little unhappy with the couple of kg's that crept on around Christmas. My husband had been talking about Primal for 12 months. I really paid no attention and sometimes would even forgot to tell him I had added breadcrumbs of flour to his meal.

After our Christmas holidays I had decided I wanted to loose 4 kgs. So I told my husband I would eat primal with him. I had not read anything about it, but just used the rule: no grains, no sugar, clean foods.

The first week was hard. I missed my sweet foods but immediately saw a difference. 2kgs gone after the first week. The second week was brilliant, full of energy and feeling great. I became motivated and tried hard to fit in 3-4 40 min walks down the river. After 20 days of eating this way, surpassing my 4 kg goal and feeling great I picked up Mark Sisson's 21 day Primal Challenge and gave it a read. And it all made sense. I haven't looked back. I lost a total of 8 kg and lost 2 dress sizes. I am fitter, happier, healthier and have enough energy to keep up with my 3 kids. I have also avoided any nasty cold or virus so far this winter. I now do short runs and boxing, I am getting stronger and fitter. I am happy with my new lifestyle and new healthy body.

Rejuvenated and 30 Lbs stronger with paleo

Meet the old Andrew

My senior year my dad (who is in the Army) was stationed to a new post (Carlisle Barracks) so I would be going to a new school for my last year of high school. Always a big exercise and nutrition guy, I was always involved with sports (Wrestling, MMA, soccer) and always researched new ways to train and fuel my body for performance.

I got really into some different martial arts and a training system called Training for Warriors. It outlined workouts and diet in a book and I liked it, mostly because of the structure. I followed it to a T, and got pretty good results, but honestly never really improved much and didn't have the energy and drive I wanted and I felt restricted by having to eat numerous times a day.

I continued this program and truthfully might have taken it too far (overtrained) but I was doing all the "right things": eating whole grains, ridding of sugars, getting my veggies and fruits, and taking all the right protein powders, creatine, NO2, multi, and other supplements.

When I moved I became consumed with this lifestyle and spent all my time doing, preparing, or thinking about my next workout or meal. Skip ahead a few hellish weeks and this turned into me evoking a bad case of anxious obsession which included some depression and some harsh physical downfalls such as weight loss, sleep deprivation, irritability and a number of mental issues. It lead to a vegan phase and anxiety about how I should train to be the best... whatever.

I went to counseling, which somewhat helped, but the real upper was a little blue pill and my discovery of the Primal Blueprint. I could go into detail about my glorious transformation, but I feel I'd loose the majority of you if I haven't already.

To make it brief I felt amazing not long after making the transition to the Primal lifestyle. I gained 30lbs of pure muscle and increased every lift by big numbers. Notice how I say lifestyle, not diet. Sure the diet rid of all the macro-nutrient, calorie confusion, it gave be long lasted energy, foods I LOVE to eat and make, unbound me from the need to eat many times a day, and I'm sure it did wonders for my insides like GI health, gut flora, heart/arterial health, etc. What really put the icing on the cake --well more like gravy on the meat-- was the living like our ancestors. How simple and effective they were with bare feet to strengthen feet muscles, move around at a slow pace, lift heavy things, and sprint once in a while.

They didn't have technology thus were not sedentary and had ample time to use their brains and hands as well as form relationships. They didn't stay up too late watching tv and had great sleep, took the time to make the food they ate and benefitted from natural whole foods and constant movement. Getting sun everyday led to great health and being exposed to germs and bacteria boosted immunity.

Now I am able to tap into their lifestyle that, unbeknownst to them, was keeping them vibrant and "the fittest". I also love to research and read blogs about ancestral health and what it means for us today.
THIS IS NO FAD DIET!!! IT'S THE OLDEST LIFESTYLE AND KEPT OUR ANCESTORS ALIVE TO PASS ON THEIR GENES TO US... WE"RE NOT MUCH DIFFERENT!

What was the biggest challenge to adopting a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet?
My biggest challenge was finding ways to provide for my lifestyle in modern society, more so in my "modern home" at first my family was skeptical but with the results as awesome as they are, no one can complain.

What advice (if any) would you give to someone interested in trying a carbohydrate-restricted or paleo diet? Were there any obstacles that you overcame that could help future dieters?
Stick with it! It may seem a little crazy at first, but your body is begging you to do it and it will thank you everyday you do it. I took it from an extreme stand point and did a huge switch... worked for me, not for everyone. Ease into it and surround yourself with people (and food) who support you and have similar mind sets.
